'Its Like Fill in the Blanks for Us': Shreyas Iyer on How Players Decode Rohit Sharma's Instructions - WATCH
Shreyas Iyer explains how he is decodes Rohit Sharma's hilarious style of communication when on the field.

Rohit Sharma’s forgetful nature is not a secret to cricket fans. The T20 World Cup-winning captain is often seen skipping some words while speaking at press conferences and public events.

Another Indian batter, Shreyas Iyer made a revelation about this topic at the CEAT Cricket Awards event in Mumbai on August 21. The Kolkata Knight Riders skipper was asked how the other members of the squad cope with the absent-mindedness of Rohit. Iyer quickly admitted that it has never been an issue as every player in the dressing room understands the underlying meaning of Rohit’s “yeh, woh, isko, usko.”

“These are like fill-in-the-blanks for us. We just visualise whom he can refer to at that time and we understand his feelings. We have been playing together for so many years. And what he is trying to say is not that he keeps beating around the bush. We know what exactly he means,” Shreyas Iyer was heard saying in a viral video.

At that moment, Rohit Sharma was present on the stage to collect the CEAT Men’s International Cricketer of the Year award. In response to Iyer, the Indian opener said, “There is a simple story behind it. I keep asking them to be themselves on the field. For that, first I need to be myself. And that’s how I am.” His honest admission received a huge round of applause from others present at the event.

Mohammed Shami also shared his thoughts about some aspects of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at the award ceremony. The veteran Indian pacer echoed the same sentiment and mentioned that every player in the squad is well aware of Rohit’s way of communication.

About the Indian captain’s on-field reactions, Shami said, “He gives you freedom as a captain. But when you cannot live up to the expectations and fail to execute the plans, he gets angry.”

Shreyas Iyer was also honoured at the 26th CEAT Cricket Awards. He received a memento in recognition of the display of his “Outstanding Leadership” in the last Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Under his captaincy, Kolkata Knight Riders lifted their third IPL trophy earlier in May, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets at Chepauk.
