The league stage of this Indian Premier League (IPL) looks set for a thrilling climax, with five teams vying for two playoff spots. Keeping aside the tournament-related developments, there are many off-field incidents which have been able to hit the headlines, thanks to the emergence of social media.

One such event transpired during a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on May 11. A young KKR fan faced enough embarrassment after he attempted to steal the ball, which was being used in the match.

The moment unfolded in the lower stands during the first innings. KKR all-rounder Andre Russel struck a monstrous six to send the ball into the crowd. A fan found the ball, hid it inside his pants and tried to flee from the scene. The youngster was recognised as a fan of Rinku Singh as he had donned a KKR jersey featuring the name of the talented batter.

However, he failed to escape a policeman caught the fan red-handed on his way to the exit gate. The police official yelled at the young man and snatched the ball from him before shooing him away from the stadium.

The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians was reduced to 16 overs after cruel rain delayed the proceedings in Kolkata. The hosts batted first and posted 157 runs on the board, riding on some crucial contributions by Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana, Andre Russel and Rinku Singh.

Mumbai Indians pulled off a strong start but failed to continue the momentum. They wrapped up their innings at 139, suffering an 18-run defeat. On the back of the victory, KKR confirmed a place in the IPL playoffs for the first time since 2021.
