MS Dhoni’s Cheeky Remark “Well There’s a New Captain’” Goes Viral
MS Dhoni was quick to remind that he is no longer the CSK skipper, and when players look at him after fielding lapses, it is not his job now to take care of that, it is Ruturaj Gaikwad’s.

Even though Ruturaj Gaikwad is leading Chennai Super Kings this IPL season, there is no question that even as the new skipper finds his feet in the new role, the presence of MS Dhoni on the field is vital for the young captain. Heck, even the camerapersons have yet to fully wrap around the idea that Dhoni is not the one calling the shots anymore on the field. So, whenever there is a lapse in the field, someone drops a catch, or a bowler bowls a bad delivery, the cameras, as muscle memory, pan across to Dhoni for his reaction, but as stoic as ever, the great man seldom gives them anything of note.

In IPL 2024, during the CSK’s second game against the Gujarat Titans, when their new buy, Rachin Ravindra, dropped a catch of Sai Sudarshan, the cameras were quick to pan across to Dhoni, but the reaction, as always, was that of nonchalance. And Ravindra was asked about that particular moment during a recent show featuring CSK’s Dhoni, Ravindra and Ravindra Jadeja.

“When you missed the catch, did you look at MS? How did he react, What did he tell you?” The anchor asked the New Zealand all-rounder, but even before Ravindra could raise his mic for a response, Dhoni stepped in with a cheeky remark, saying, “Well, there’s a new captain.”

Dhoni was, of course, referencing Gaikwad and how he is relieved of the duties of giving staredowns to his players for their mistakes. However, the veteran did concede that players would often look at him even now, more out of muscle memory than anything else, but added that Gaikwad is also a level-headed bloke and would seldom react animatedly to such lapses.

“It (muscle memory) is there. But, I am not somebody who reacts a lot, especially when somebody is playing his first game or second game. I think Rutu (Ruturaj) is quite the same. But it was fun to watch him (Ravindra) move all round the ground,” Dhoni added.
