SL vs NZ: Sri Lanka Rope in Uncapped Off-spinner to Replace Injured Vishwa Fernando for 2nd Test
Sri Lanka have brought in the uncapped spinner, Nishan Peiris in place of the injured Vishwa Fernando for the second Test against New Zealand.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Board on Tuesday, announced that the left-arm pacer Vishwa Fernando will not be a part of the squad taking part in the second Test against New Zealand in Galle. Instead, the uncapped Nishan Peiris will be brought into the squad.

As per the post on Sri Lanka Cricket’s official handle on X (formerly known as Twitter), Fernando suffered some tightness in his right hamstring during a practice session. As a precautionary measure, the pacer has been sent to the High Performance Centre for rehabilitation.

As for Sri Lanka’s newest addition to the squad, Peiris is a 27-year-old spin bowler who specialises in off-spin bowling. The spinner has played for both Galle and Colombo in the domestic circuit and has also been part of the Sri Lanka A side as well.

He has played a total of 41 matches in the first-class format, picking up a total of 172 wickets at an average of 24.37. He also has a fair amount of experience playing in List A and T20 cricket as well where he has picked up 86 and 43 wickets respectively.

Sri Lanka having won the first Test will look to go for the win in the second Test as well. With home advantage on their side, the side has been able to make it count with the likes of Prabath Jayasuriya performing well with a nine-wicket haul in the previous game.

The Lankan’s batting unit has also been performing well with the likes of Kamindu Mendis continuing his stellar batting form scoring a crucial century in the first Test to help set the tone.

New Zealand on the other hand have a lot at stake. They will hope to win as many games as possible to ensure that they can seal a spot in the World Test Championship final by securing a top-two finish. The Kiwis’ bowling unit has been put to the test but the likes of Will O’Rourke and Ajaz Patel are the star bowlers for the side.

The second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand is set to begin from September 26 through to September 30 at the Galle International Stadium.
