Former England captain Eoin Morgan has termed Team India as the ‘strongest side’ of the T20 World Cup 2024 that gets underway later this week. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue will embark on their campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York (United States of America).
India are placed in Group A along with Ireland, hosts USA, Canada and arch-rival Pakistan.
Speaking with former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports Cricket, Morgan lauded the depth of the Indian team which he expects to pose a massive threat to the opposition they will face at the T20I showpiece.
“The strongest side, even with injuries throughout the tournament, is India, without a doubt. Their strength and depth is absolutely incredible at the moment. And it’s almost probably, we’re talking about who the players that were missed out in their squad of 15 because of the quality that they possess,” Morgan said.
“They are favorites for me. I think that they’re just the quality that they have on paper. If they produce it, I think they can, they can beat anybody quite well in the tournament,” he added.
Meanwhile, Atherton pointed out that India have never won a T20 World Cup after lifting the trophy in the inaugural edition, in 2007. He further observed that T20 cricket evolved in the country after India’s title win under MS Dhoni’s leadership and even IPL came into existence but the team still has one world title to their name.
“They haven’t won it since that first World Cup back in 2007,” Atherton said. “That’s the great irony. That’s how long It’s also an irony because everybody talks about the IPL and how that has improved. India’s T20 cricket. The irony is the only time they’ve won it was pre-IPL.”
