As the curtains are set to come down on what has been an illustrious career for one of Australia’s premier all-format batters, David Warner, he continues to remain confused regarding the fuss that has been created with his run of poor form recently and the calls regarding him being replaced by the newest batting sensation, Jake Fraser-McGurk.
Warner spoke on the widespread chatter regarding his selection and revealed that he remains unbothered about such talks. He then continued to showcase his class as he smacked a 51-ball 56 in his opening game in the T20 World Cup 2024 against Oman.
“It doesn’t fuel me. It’s in one ear and out the other. I don’t understand why it’s always about myself. There are 11 players in the team. I don’t understand it. I don’t get it. I just go out there and score runs,” said Warner who was quoted by FoxSports.

Warner suggested that he has been criticised for his playing style for quite some time now but also added that he won’t let the external noise get to him as long as he continues scoring runs for his time and maintains his contributions.
“People think they have to keep criticising the way that I play. I don’t know what it is. Honestly, I have no answers as to why people are like that. I’ve had it my whole career. I don’t look at it. I don’t listen to it and when you’re all the way around the world, you don’t need to see it. As long as I’m contributing to the team and I’m putting us in the best position possible, I’ll just keep trying my best,” he commented.
The veteran opening batter revealed that he is not too surprised by the conditions that were on offer considering his experience playing in the Caribbean and already knows how to counteract the varied bounce that is on offer. Rather than going for the pull on the length deliveries, Warner suggested that the batters might be better off trying to play the straighter shots.

He said, “I’m not shocked. I’ve played CPL (Caribbean Premier League) here in 2018. I’ve played a lot of cricket over here. They’re (slow wickets) all the same. The variation in bounce is the one that surprises you because naturally when they pitch the ball on that 8m length, your natural instinct is to pull it. You have to go back to targeting straight, backing yourself and if it does bounce (unusually), so be it.”
Warner will be looking to close out his international career on a high having won everything he can for Australia. Another trophy could be on the cards for the Aussies and Warner could play a crucial role in their charge for an international treble.
