David Warner’s international career came to a quiet end with Australia’s elimination from the T20 World Cup 2024. Warner had earlier confirmed that the 2024 T20 World Cup would be his last international tournament.
Australia, after losing to India in their third and final Super 8 match of the world cup, needed Bangladesh to beat Afghanistan to qualify for the semi-finals but it wasn’t the case.

“I just bumped into him (Warner). Then I put my arm around him and said, ‘Let’s hope it’s not your last game. But if it is, just take a moment tonight to sit back by yourself and reflect on what has been an unbelievable career across all three formats for Australia’,” Ponting said.
“We know he retired in the summer from Test cricket but you will struggle to find a guy that has as big an impact on all three forms in Australian cricket,” the World Cup-winning skipper added.
Ponting further talked about his bond with Warner.
The duo shared the Australian dressing room before Ponting’s retirement from all forms of cricket in 2013.
Ponting has also coached Warner as part of the Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals.
“I’ve been able to play with him, I’ve been able to coach him in the IPL the last couple of years and I really enjoy his company. So he should be very proud of what he’s done,” Ponting said.
In chase of a mammoth 206-run target against India, Warner managed only six runs before being dismissed. Travis struck a quickfire half-century but India overcame that for a 24-run win.
