'Virat Kohli Spat at me, AB de Villiers Found Out What he Did And...': Dean Elgar Recalls Fiery Encounter With India Star
Former South Africa captain Dean Elgar reveals his heated exchange with Virat Kohli during the 2015 tour and how the Indian star later apologised to him for his actions.

Former South Africa captain Dean Elgar has revealed the details of his first on-field encounter with Virat Kohli that saw the two exchange choicest words during the 2015 Test series in India.

Elgar claims he was enraged after Kohli ‘spat’ at him and he fired a local South African profanity at the then India captain’s direction.

“Those wickets (during 2015 tour) were jokes. And I came into bat and I was actually like holding my own against (Ravichandran) Ashwin and what’s his name… Ravindra Jadeja. And Kohli, he like spat at me. I said to him if you do that, I’ll ******g ***** you with this bat,” Elgar said on Banter, with The Boys podcast.

Kohli understood what Elgar had said since he was teammate with South African AB de Villiers at IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“Yes, he (Kohli) did because de Villiers was his teammate at RCB, so he understood. And I said if you do that, I’ll… on this field, I’ll absolutely knock you out,” Elgar said.

Elgar, who retired from international cricket earlier this month with his final Test series coming against India, then added that De Villiers spoke with Kohli after finding out what he had done.

“De Villiers found out what he did and he went up to him (Kohli) and said ‘Why are you spitting at my teammate bud?’ Two years later, playing in South Africa, he (Kohli) said can we go for a drink at the end of the series? I want to apologise for my actions,” Elgar said.

“Punchline is we drank till 3 in the morning, this is when he used to drink. So long story short, that was my first encounter with Kohli,” he added.

While their first interaction wasn’t a pleasant one, the duo did make up later on and Kohli hugged Elgar after he was dismissed in his final innings of international career in Cape Town.

Kohli then gifted Elgar with a signed jersey as a memento on  behalf of the Indian team after the match.
