It’s a hard-hitting fact that South Africa remains the final frontier for Team India as they have never won a Test series in the Rainbow Nation. But the unit under Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid will look to rewrite history when they take on the hosts in the Boxing Day Test in Centurion on Monday.

Dravid and South Africa have a very old connection. The last time he toured the country the captain of the side, India registered their first-ever win against the Proteas in Test cricket. Back in 2006-07, Sreesanth bagged an 8-wicket match-haul in Johannesburg to hand India a 123-run win. But the visitors lost the next two games and the series as well.

As he returns to South African soil as the head coach, he would like to guide his team to a first-ever Test series win against the Proteas. Meanwhile, Dravid was seen rolling his arm over at the SuperSport Park before the start of play on Tuesday. The former India captain bowling with the red ball amused the commentators standing on the sidelines.

Earlier, South Africa won the toss and asked India to bat first. The start of play was delayed by 30 minutes because of damp patches on the pitch, which had been covered since Sunday while a reported 51mm of rain fell.

South Africa opted for an all-seam attack and included two debutants in batsman David Bedingham and left-arm fast bowler Nandre Burger. Captain Temba Bavuma said fast bowler Lungi Ngidi had recovered from an ankle injury but was not considered match-fit.

“The wicket has been undercover for the past two days and there is a bit of moisture in the wicket, so we would like to make use of it,” said Bavuma at the toss.

On the other hand, Indian captain Rohit Sharma said he was not sure about whether he wanted to bat or bowl. India gave a first Test cap to fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, while off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was preferred to left-armer Ravindra Jadeja.

“There is a bit of grass and some moisture. We understand the challenge of batting first but we know what to expect,” Rohit said.
