Who Will Continue the Sequence? 'From Keki Tarapore to Rahul Dravid', India's Team Managers and Head Coaches Over the Years
As wait for the confirmation on Rahul Dravid's successor drags on, here is a look at those who have stepped up to the daunting task of coaching the heralded Indian cricket team through the ages.

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid shocked the nation when he announced that he would be stepping down from the role following the conclusion of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup slated to be played in the USA and West Indies.

Dravid’s decision created a clamour as it was set to create a vacuum in the highly lucrative position of the national side’s head coach. Multiple legendary names were contacted in relation to succeeding the Wall in the trying position, with Gautam Gambhir emerging at pole to replace his compatriot and one-time teammate.

As wait for the confirmation of the challenge goes on, here is a look at those who have stepped up to the daunting task of coaching the heralded Indian cricket team through the ages.

Back in the day, up until 1990, when the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi took over as a manager cum coach of the Indian side, the national team was accompanied by ad hoc managers.

While the crafty Bedi is credited as the first full-time coach, he also acted in the capacity of the manager, as did his successor Abbas Ali Baig.

And therefore the role of the first full-time out-and-out head coach fell to Ajit Wadekar, who took command of the team in the year 1992 and held the position till 1996.

The trend set by Wadekar, with one man coaching the side and a separate person taking charge of the managerial duties, persists to date and serves as a guiding light for those willing to aid the famous men in blue in pursuit of glory time and again.

The esteemed role has been held by Indians for the most part of history, with the exception of the tenures of Kiwi John Wright, who became the first overseas coach of the Indian national team in the year 2000, followed by Australian Greg Chapel in 2005, South African Gary Kirsten, who led India to their second ODI World Cup in the year 2011 and Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher, who succeeded the Protea after his curtain-call.
