Imagine parents receiving their degrees on stage at a convocation ceremony and their child sitting in the audience and cheering. This incident happened last Monday at BMS College of Commerce and Management in Bengaluru.
Five-year-old Sunaina cheered as her parents, dressed in graduation gowns and caps, received their MBA degrees. It was a very special moment for Siddharth P, 40 and Pooja MB, 35. Siddharth received his MBA in marketing and Pooja in finance.
Pooja did her BCom in 2010 and Siddharth did his BBA in 2019. After that, the couple got caught up in their commitments. But both had a desire to further their education. To make this a reality, they took up MBA studies in 2022. Before his BBA studies, Siddharth did a Btech from Bangalore University in 2006.
Speaking to the Times of India, Pooja said, “After B.Com, I wanted to study further. But when the opportunity came, I was scared because I had a three-year-old daughter. I thought I would not be able to complete the course. But my colleagues and family were very supportive. The first semester was difficult, but after that it became easy.
Speaking about her husband, who also pursued the MBA, Pooja said, “First I started and then asked Siddhant. That helped us compare notes and clear the confusion. She said that Siddharth’s aunt Ragini is the trustee of Narayan Sansthan. She helped in looking after Sunaina.
Siddharth said that he had quit his engineering course after falling behind. After that, he started writing content. Now he works as a senior marketing manager in a college.
Education has no retirement age and this belief inspired 70-year-old Malaysian Toh Hong Keng to achieve his goal even after retirement. He has now been recognised as the oldest medical graduate from Southwestern University PHINMA in Cebu, Philippines, having completed his medical degree in July this year. According to reports, when Toh Hong Keng first attended classes at Southwestern University PHINMA, students mistakenly assumed he was a professor instead of a new medical student.
In July 2024, this retired Malaysian executive achieved a remarkable milestone by graduating from medical school, making him one of the world’s oldest medical graduates.
“My family and friends were surprised at first. Several of my friends thought I was crazy wanting to study medicine at this age. It wasn’t always easy. At 65 to 70 years old, my memory, eyesight, hearing and body are not as good as when I was younger,” Toh Hong Keng told CNN.
