On the work front, Vikrant is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film, 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It draws inspiration from real-life tales of aspirants preparing for the formidable UPSC exam. It is filmed in real-life locations with actual students, offering a gritty portrayal of UPSC candidates, their resolve, moral values and the enduring bonds they forge.
Speaking to us, Vikrant reveals that he harboured a secret desire to sit for the exams at one point in time. “I knew that 32 is the age limit for UPSC. I’m talking about 2008-2009. I thought of even attempting it but then I realised that it would take me a year at least to prepare for the examination, which would mean that I would have had to take a break from acting,” he says.
The Love Hostel and Haseen Dillruba actor further adds, “I never had the courage to actually start preparing for UPSC. I still think to myself about how my life would be if I had cleared the exams. This thought usually comes to me when I sit and watch Kaun Banega Crorepati and have the correct answers to all the questions asked. That’s when I feel like I’m quite intelligent (laughs).”
Looking back at his student days and why his parents never expected him to appear for UPSC exams unlike a lot of Indian families, Vikrant recalls, “A lot of it depends on the environment you’ve at home. I never had anyone with a government job in my family. I never had any pressure from my parents to sit for UPSC exam. They were very lenient.”
He continues, “Much like any other middle-class family, they wanted to me to at least have a graduation degree, so that I can have a back-up in case my acting career doesn’t take off. We didn’t have much information about UPSC. There are pockets in Mumbai where you see a craze for UPSC. But since it’s such a dynamic cosmopolitan city, a lot of people focus on private jobs.”
12th Fail is scheduled for a release on October 27.
