La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are eyeing to sign Argentine sensation Julian Alvarez. As per Argentine football journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, the Spanish side has already made an advancement for the player. On July 16, Merlo shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) claiming, “[Exclusive] Atletico Madrid advanced for Julian Alvarez. There are already negotiations for the Argentine national team forward.” He also explained that the Manchester City forward’s reason for considering a move away from the Premier League champions is due to concerns surrounding his role. “(Julian Alvarez) is willing to leave Manchester City because he wants a greater role,” Merlo added.

Earlier this week, Julian Alvarez lifted his second Copa America title after beating Colombia in the final. While he was on national duty with Argentina, reports emerged claiming the young forward was not happy with his role at Manchester City. At just 24 years of age, Alvarez has already won several club and international titles. The Argentine is now understood to be hungry for more trophies which explains his desire to start more games at the club level.

Overall, Julian Alvarez is looking for a more prominent role at Manchester City with a preference to play as the team’s centre-forward. Given that the Pep Guardiola-coached side already has Erling Haaland for that position, being a regular striker for Manchester City might just be off the cards for Alvarez. With the hopes of solving this dilemma, the reigning Premier League champions are expected to hold talks with Alvarez.

As per ESPN, Atletico Madrid have already considered different alternatives to strengthen their attacking line. The search began after Netherlands forward Memphis Depay’s departure turned out to be a reality. With Alvaro Morata set to join AC Milan and Joao Felix finding himself on the transfer market, Alvarez could be appointed to a starring role at Atletico Madrid. ESPN’s sources also specified that the Diego Simeone-coached side realise that Manchester City will not be letting their player go for a low fee. Hence, the Spanish side is also considering the option of a loan deal.

Julian Alvarez arrived at Manchester City in 2022 from River Plate. Since then, Alvarez has represented Manchester City in 103 matches while scoring 36 times for them.
