Soon enough, you'll be able to photograph your upright broom and impress your friends!
Performing the Trick
Find a flat area where you can place the broom. Search for some floor space that’s smooth and flat without any dips or ridges. Since the broom will be balancing on its bristles, you’ll need to place it on a firm surface, like a smooth kitchen or garage floor. For instance, hardwood or tile floors can be a bit uneven, and may not be a great surface to try the broom challenge.
Pick out a broom with a low center of gravity. Look for brooms that have a thick, flat section of bristles protruding from the bottom, along with a secure cover holding the bristles in place and connecting them to the broom handle. Ideally, look for a broom that’s low to the ground, as opposed to a broom with the bristles tied in place. Most store bought brooms will work well for this.
Place the broom firmly on the ground. Grip the broom around the handle and arrange it on the ground, placing the broom’s onto the bristles. Ideally, the broom’s bristles will spread out slightly to the left and right, providing structural support to the broom. Double-check that the broom isn’t leaning on anything, or else the trick won’t be believable.
Troubleshooting
Try the trick again if the broom shifts. Release the handle completely and check if the broom shifts or not. Don’t be discouraged if your broom falls over at first—it may take a few tries before it stands upright. Keep placing your broom on the flat ground and letting go, then checking to see if it stands on its own. Double-check that the broom is centered when you’re placing it down. If it’s lopsided, it’ll be more likely to fall over.
Move your broom to a more flat and open area. If you’re working in a tight, cramped area, you may feel comfortable experimenting in a wider, more open space. Take your broom outside to a large, flat area, like a gymnasium or a basketball court. You may have more luck with a change in scenery!
Don’t limit the trick to a certain time of the day. It’s commonly believed that brooms can stand upright due to a specific planetary alignment or gravitational pull, but this isn’t the case. You can get a broom to stand upright at any hour of any day, so don’t feel like you can only perform this trick on special astronomical holidays! While your broom will stand upright on the vernal equinox, it will also stand upright during any other day of the year.
