Mastering the Basics
Choose your loadout. You must decide which secondary you want to use before you start sticky jumping. The Demoman has 4 Stickybomb launchers to choose from: Stickybomb Launcher: The default secondary for Demoman. It's a good choice if you don't have the other alternatives as it does good damage if you ever need to defend yourself. You will need to manage your health well, sticky jumping with this as will chip away a huge chunk of your health when you perform a sticky jump. Sticky Jumper: Recommended for beginners, it's a good set of training wheels for complete beginners. It does no damage at all so you're sacrificing damage for more mobility. If you can reliably hit with your primary weapon, this launcher is a great utility and makes you a deadly and mobile target. Quickiebomb Launcher: Useful in some situations. You can still sticky jump with it, but with its low magazine capacity, you will be reloading a lot. You are much better off dealing damage from a distance with its faster charge rate. Scottish Resistance: Not recommended for beginners, its major downside is the longer activate time which makes you wait for a moment before you can sticky jump. This is more useful when performing more advanced sticky jumps. It should be used primarily on defense or Mann vs Machine mode.
Put down 1 or 2 stickybombs. Bring out your secondary by pressing "2" on the keyboard and start laying down stickybombs. Depending on how fast or high you want to go, you can adjust how many stickybombs you can put down. It is ill-advised to go for 3 stickybombs as it does too much damage to your health or even die from the explosion. You can also try placing the stickybombs onto a wall to make it easier to launch yourself forward.
Walk towards your stickybombs. To make it easier, you can move to the direction you are facing - simply press "W" to do so. You need to gain momentum towards your desired direction so you sticky jump in that direction, unless if you're planning to sticky jump vertically.
Jump + Crouch + Detonate. When you're close or directly above your stickybombs, immediately jump, crouch, and detonate, or spacebar + ctrl + right mouse button, then you will be launched over a great distance. If you don't jump at all, you'll only deal more damage to yourself and only cover a small distance. If you jump but don't crouch, you'll cover a fair distance. Jumping then crouching gives the most amount of distance.
Calculating Your Flight and Fall Damage
Adjust your timing and angle. Sticky jumping works like basic physics. If you wish to go vertically up, detonate when you're exactly above your stickybombs or detonate more early. If you wish to go forward you detonate later in order to get launched at an angle. You need to be very precise and decide quickly, as one small misadjustment could completely ruin your jump.
Land on water or ramps. Due to how the game engine works, landing on water completely negates all fall damage, no matter how deep, and no matter how fast you landed. This also works for ramps. Look for any stairs or slanted surfaces, with enough speed you will begin to slide on it thus negating the fall damage.
