HYDERABAD: As many as 1,000 additional seats will be available in medical colleges in the state from this academic year. According to the medical and health minister DL Ravindra Reddy, the Medical Council of India has promised 600 medical seats in 10 government medical colleges and the remaining 400 in private colleges. As recruitment of faculty is imperative for allotment of seats, the state government has decided to hasten the process.

"The faculty recruitment and promotion of professors, associate professors and assistant professors would be completed in two days," Ravindra Reddy said. Through the court orders, 100 seats each will be made available in Visakhapatnam Medical College, Apollo Group's Medical College and Malla Reddy Medical College.

The new Government Medical College in Nizamabad will also be allotted 100 seats and the remaining 100 seats distributed among private colleges, depending on their existing infrastructure. Ravindra Reddy said that a total of 4,800 MBBS seats will be made available this academic year, including 1,800 in government colleges.

The health minister has sought Rs 30 crore for completion of the Srirampur campus in Nalgonda of the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences which was lying unused, though it was constructed in 2009.

Similarly, the government needs Rs 150 crore to complete the Nizamabad Medical College. He said that the Visakhapatnam Institute of Medical Sciences building has been constructed but to commission the hospital Rs 30 crore was required. The minister also appealed to the Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to upgrade the Niloufer Hospital as Neonatal Institute of Pediatrics.
