With delayed monsoon activity and movement, Rajasthan's 19 out of 33 districts were still under the category of deficit rainfall as the whole state received 19.23 per cent less rainfall this season so far as against the previous year, according to MeT report.

From June 1 to August 5, the state has received 228.69 mm of rainfall as against 379 mm of 2013, the report said. Only Churu and Sikar districts were blessed with excess rainfall under the category of 20 to 60 per cent of rains, while monsoon was normal in 12 districts and 19 fell under the category of "deficit rainfall".

Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Kota, Baran, Jhunjhunu, Karauli, Bharatpur, Tonk, Nagaur, Hanumangarh, Sriganganagar and Bikaner received normal rainfall this season.

Western Rajasthan, used to face duststorms and whirls, was the worst hit on the monsoon front as the entire Jodhpur division was in the category of deficit rainfall which included Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Barmer, Jalore, Sirohi and Pali.

Even districts of Jaipur, Alwar, Dausa, Bhilwara, Ajmer, Bundi, Jhalawar, Banswara, Pratapgarh and Rajsamand did not fetch normal rains causing major concern for cultivation of Kharif crops, especially Bajra sown following initial rains. Out of the 724 dams in the state, only 31 were seen full flowing, while 320 dams were partially filled as the catchment areas in the state remained dry, the MeT report said.

The drought situation was still looming over the state, and if the scattered rains continued in the current month of August, there might be slight improvement in the agriculture production, an agriculture department official told PTI.

The prospects of better Kharif production especially of Bajra, cereals and legumes would be bleak as the sowing of crops was delayed by over a month, the official said.
