A day after the Excise Dept and the Sales Tax Department beefed up inspections at the checkposts in Aryankavu, nearly 1,900 litres of illicit spirit was seized from a mini lorry at the checkpost during the early hours of Sunday.
The spirit was found hidden beneath a load of fish in 54 cans.
The driver and the cleaner managed to escape from being caught while the Excise officials were conducting a detail raid.
A Vigilance raid the other day had gained vital clues that rampant smuggling of illegal spirit aiming the Onam season has been taking place through Aryankavu, which borders Tamil Nadu.
Five officials at the Excise check post were transferred on Saturday following the Vigilance findings.
The documents gained from the vehicle showed that the vehicle was bound to Kompuzha in Pathanamathitta from Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.
The officials who inspected the vehicle became suspicious, as the foul smell was emanating from the fish consignment.
A thorough search in the vehicle showed that the spirit cans were hidden inside the fish.
The Excise registered a case against Satheesh of Anchal, who was identified as the driver of the seized vehicle.
It is suspected that the source is Karnataka and the spirit was canned at Puliyamkudi near the border.
