As many as 20 autorickshaws were fined and five were seized on Monday for transporting more than five school children during a check conducted by the transport officials in the district.
Transport officials had intensified their check on school autos following the death of an eight-year-old school girl in Madurai after she fell from the auto and was run over by the vehicle.
On Monday, a team headed by Motor Vehicle Inspector Balasubramanian conducted the check near Bagayam at around 8.30 am before the school hours and again at 3.45 pm at Officer’s Line in Vellore.
“A fine of `500 was levied on 20 autos that were found transporting more than five school children. Five autorickshaws were seized for transporting more than 10 children, in the district,” said Vellore RTO Pon Senthilnathan.
He said, “A total of 101 buses belonging to schools and colleges were fined `1,000 to
`4,000 so far and fitness certificates were cancelled for 89 vehicles in the district. The bus officials should fix the flaws and get an approval from the RTO for using them on roads again.”
“A fine `100 has been levied on 82 cars out of which, blackfilms were manually torn and removed by the department staff on 27 cars,” Pon Senthilnathan added.
