Forty-three candidates chose their seats in medical colleges in a special counselling session organised in the city on Thursday. The counselling had been called after the Supreme Court, in a landmark judgement, ordered the Tamil Nadu government to create 19 per cent extra seats to accommodate high-scoring students from the general category, who had not been allotted seats in counselling that ended on September 17.

In all, 31 seats had been created in nine government medical colleges in the open category. The special counselling session had been called at short notice to fill these seats, and also to fill the vacancies this might have created in self-financing colleges. Twelve seats were available in self-financing medical colleges, which were also filled.

“We have asked the candidates to join their respective colleges by September 29. The colleges have also been asked to work on that day so the candidates do not miss the Medical Council of India deadline,” said Dr R G Sukumar, secretary of the Directorate of Medical Education’s Selection Committee.
