New Delhi: A total of 57 lakh people are affected by AIDS in India and 11,000 persons contract the disease every day in the country, Justice Jaichandran of the Madras High Court said on Monday.
Addresing an AIDS awareness programme at Namakkal, in which Madras High Court Chief Justice A P Shah was also present, he said a total of 6.5 crore people all over the world are affected by the disease.
Ninety-five of those affected, especially women, are from backward areas, he said.
One out of every seven affected in the world is an Indian, he added.
He said the Aids the incidence of aids was more in Karur, Erode, Madurai, Tiruchirappali, Perambalur, Krishnagir and Namakkal Districts.
Chief Justice A P Shah distributed assistance under the programme to 49 persons.
AIDS awareness project director Supriya Sahu, Namakkal collector Sundaramoorthy and Justice Prabha Sridevan of the Madras High Court also spoke on the occasion.
