New Delhi: Days after evading arrest, Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti was on Monday arrested after surrendering at a police station in Dwarka in the national capital. Police is questioning the leader in a domestic violence case filed against him by his wife Lipika Mitra.
Earlier, Bharti had arrived with his team of lawyers at Dwarka court to surrender.
Bharti surrendered after the Supreme Court rejected his bail plea and ordered him to surrender on Monday itself.
Talking to mediapersons outside the police station, the AAP MLA claimed that he was "not evading law", adding that he was just "availing the legal remedies available to him as a citizen of India".
"I am here to surrender on the direction of the honourable Supreme Court...the Constitution of India provides legal remedies to every citizen," said Bharti, flashing a copy of Constitution to mediapersons.
His lawyer, however, skirted questions, saying the future course of action will be for everyone to see.
The former Delhi law minister was seeking protection from arrest in a domestic violence and attempt to murder case in which the Delhi High Court had already rejected his petition for anticipatory bail.
This comes days after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that Bharti was becoming an embarrassment for his family as well as the Aam Aadmi Party.
