Jerusalem: Hamas is revoking recent legislation that gave more powers to Fatah leader, President Mahmoud Abbas. Hamas leaders said that the party would run the Parliament as it sees fit, and Fatah should adjust.
Triggering a major confrontation with Fatah party, Hamas-dominated-Palestinian Legisltative Council has voted to strip Abbas of certain powers provided by the Fatah-led previous government through certain legislations.
Fatah MPs walked out in protest and were joined by hundreds of supporters in Gaza city. This follows a vote to negate all decisions made by the previous parliament at its final session.
Abbas countered that his party would not be overruled on order by a numerical majority. In the meantime, an Israeli air strike killed two militants and 3 passersby including an 8-year-old boy.
Hamas and Fatah were united in denouncing what Abbas called a "dangerous escalation" against the Palestinian people.
The crisis, the worst since Hamas scored a landslide victory in January's general elections, kicked off following a PLC session held in Ramallah and Gaza City on Monday, through video conferencing, decided to annul a number of legislations carried out by the Fatah-led previous government soon after the parliamentary elections.
The most contentious of the legislations passed by the previous government empowers Abbas to revoke laws and even dissolve the PLC.
