HYDERABAD: The state government is being buffeted by demands for and against enforcing a ban on opening of new colleges.Recently, the state government, under pressure from engineering college associations, wrote to the Union human resources development ministry not to permit new professional colleges because of glut in seats in 2012-13 academic year. Thousands of seats in engineering, pharmacy, MCA, MBA, polytechnic and other technical courses had remain vacant last year. Interestingly, the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) got as many as 41 applications this year to set up new colleges in the state including 17 polytechnic, 11 engineering, six MBA, two pharmacy, 2 technical campuses and one PGDM for 2012-2013 academic year. They had reportedly obtained no objection certificate from the Department of Technical Education of the state government and applied for the AICTE.After the receipt of the applications, the AICTE had appointed two committees to scrutinise the 41 applications, which rejected 28 applications stating that the applicants had failed to fulfil the eligibility criteria like necessary infrastructure.
