AIIMS doctor sacked for manhandling patient
According to a senior doctor at AIIMS, the assistant professor had allegedly misbehaved with and manhandled a patient in September 2015.

New Delhi: The AIIMS administration has terminated an assistant professor from service for allegedly misbehaving and manhandling a patient, a move which has drawn flak from the Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIIMS).

On the basis of a complaint by the patient, an FIR was also lodged against the concerned doctor who had joined the institute's department of Medicine in May 2014 on probation.

According to a senior doctor at AIIMS, the assistant professor had allegedly misbehaved with and manhandled a patient in September last year, following which an enquiry committee was constituted under the head of the department S K Sharma.

The committee submitted its report based on which the AIIMS administration took the decision on January 6 to terminate the doctor's contract.

Terming the AIIMS administration's decision as an extreme step, FAIIMS has called a general body meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue.

"In the last 50 years of AIIMS' history, only seven professors, who had gone abroad and did not respond to the communication by the hospital as to whether they will be coming back to join, were removed from service.

"No other faculty member was ever sacked on the basis of such allegations and proper rules were not followed. So tomorrow we have called a general body meeting to discuss the issue," said a doctor associated with FAIIMS.

According to sources, permission of Union Health Minister J P Nadda, also the President of AIIMS, was taken before the accused doctor's contract was terminated.
