CHENNAI: Colours have a language of their own. At least that is what Chennai-based artist Achuthan Kudallur likes to believe. The crazy medley of colours and the bold strokes are a few of the highlights of his works. After a gap of 10 years, Kudallur has now over 30 paintings of his on display at the Vinnyasa Premier Art Gallery. His current show doesn't have a name but has a theme – it's all about colours. He says, “I am trying to shape every colour. They are expressive. Well, I have tried experimenting with colours as much as possible. Also, I have changed the size of my canvas each time, and this is only to alter the impact of every painting. It gives them a certain amount of uniqueness.” Talking of inspiration, he says, “I do abstract art. Now, the meaning of the word abstract can be very tricky because it varies from person to person. For me whatever I see around me inspires me. The hues and tones of every colour inspire me. Every colour has a separate identity. So, when you combine them, you create something new. A new reality. And I have been trying to do the same.” Kudallur believes in nature and its endless shades of colours. He points out that painting a figure limits the possibility of playing with colours. Therefore, it is almost like an obstruction in creativity. Having said that, he quickly says, “I am not arguing or defending my work. I am just saying this is how it should be.” While glancing through the paintings, the richness of the primary colours (red, blue and green) is what attracts you the most. Starting from fireworks to village fairs, everything seems to have inspired this artist. Well, no wonder then, the response to his exhibition has been extraordinary so far. “The exhibition is doing really well. Better than what I had expected,” says Kudallur. The exhibition is on at the Vinnyasa Premier Art Gallery till January 20. For details, call 24982515
