Jabalpur: Officers of Military Intelligence have launched a probe against an Army officer posted at Jabalpur, in connection with charges of him being honey trapped by alleged ISI agents.
The officer, of Lt Colonel rank, is believed to have sent vital defence information outside the country in return for a large sum of money.
Sources said that MI team from Army Central Command headquarters in Lucknow had reached Jabalpur on Monday evening and started questioning the officer posted at 506 Army Base Workshop in the city.
They searched the residence of the officer said to be posted as Lt Colonel and grilled him the next day, sources added.
The officer, till Wednesday night, was still in Jabalpur and wasn’t arrested. He was being questioned by the Counter Intelligence Wing.
This came after MI received information that the officer had been honey trapped by ISI agents and subsequently received a large sum of money, said to be around one crore, in his account in exchange for vital defence information.
Vital information has been found his computer and several crucial documents too have been seized from his possession by MI, said sources.
Another theory was floated in local circles whether the officer fell victim to phishing e-mails and inadvertently leaked vital defence documents. Forensic examination of officer’s computer was also underway. Given the sensitive nature of the case, the senior army officer remained tight-lipped on the entire episode.
A week ago, an Air Force officer was taken into custody for allegedly leaking classified defence information to ISI agents posing as models over social media chats.
