On Sunday, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey met with the home minister to discuss the prevailing situation in the Northeastern state.
Ethnic violence which erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, after a tribal solidarity march in the hill districts protested against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Since then, over 220 people from both the Kuki and Meitei communities, as well as security personnel, have been killed in the ongoing conflict.
Meiteis account for about 53% of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40% and reside mainly in the hill districts.
