TIRUNELVELI: Protesters, who were staging a hunger strike at Idinthakarai against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) formally ended their fast on Thursday.  Demanding for KKNPP’s shutdown, 127 protesters had been staging indefinite fast at the coastal village of Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district since September 11.  On the eleventh day of the fast, protest committee members met Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in Chennai on Wednesday.Accepting Chief Minister  J Jayalalithaa’s assurance to pass a resolution in the State cabinet on Thursday, urging the Central government to suspend the works on the plant until people’s fears are allayed, they announced in Chennai to end the protest.  But, the fast was formally finished on Thursday at Idinthakarai.On Thursday morning, the protest committee returned from Chennai and detailed their meeting with the Chief Minister.  Thoothukudi RC Diocese Bishop, Yvon Ambrose gave juice to the protesters, finishing the fast.Pushparayan, a protest committee member, told Express that Tamil Nadu cabinet had passed the resolution.  “Our next step would be to protest against the central government, as the state government has no power to scrap the project,” he said.He further informed that they were already planning their next course of protest.  On September 25, all anti-nuclear groups would meet at Madurai, and mutually decide to spread the protest across the State.  “We would also meet the state political leaders to garner support,” Pushparayan added.
