‘’When India generates 65 percent electricity from coal and natural gas and 20 percent from tidal projects, why compromise the life of more than 10,000 people for generating just 3 per cent of electricity from nuclear power?” asked Thiruvananthapuram Archbishop M Soosai Pakiam.
He was speaking after inaugurating a meeting to express solidarity with Koodankulam protest organised under the aegis of Santhi Samithi at Press Club here on Sunday.
He questioned the wisdom of generating electricity using an expensive method when less expensive measures are available.
“We strongly oppose and condemn the project which neglects the security of the life of thousands of people. Is development above the lives of people and environment? Top leaders at the Centre and others call those who oppose nuclear power as American traitors and we do not know what name they are going to give us,” he said.
“Except 31 nations in the world, the rest of the countries are not relying on nuclear power,” he added.
Poetess Sugathakumari, who presided over the function, expressed concern over the fears surrounding the Koodankulam project.
Prof R V G Menon made a subject presentation after the inauguration.
This was followed by discussions in which Gandhian P Gopinathan Nair, P K Hamsa Moulavi Farooqi, Swami Sookshmananda, Swami Sandeepanandagiri, Prof D Vinayachandran, T Peter and M Mehaboob participated.
Fr Eugene Pereira welcomed the gathering and Gandhian Study Centre coordinator J M Rahim proposed a vote of thanks.
Before the inauguration, a power point presentation on ‘Atomic power plants and threats’ was presented by Abi George.
This was followed by the screening of video collage on Koodankulam protest.
The singers of MBS Youth Choir presented a musical tribute.
