New Delhi: Police have arrested a man working for the Army in the Capital as he handed classified documents to a Pakistani official, a senior police officer said on Saturday, triggering a strong Pakistani protest.

Anil Kumar, who police said worked in the Army's insurance directorate, was arrested late on Friday night, Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar said.

"He was arrested yesterday evening for passing secret documents to an official from the Pakistani High Commission," Commissioner Kumar said on Saturday.

The official was handed over to the Pakistani officials after all legal formalities were completed, he added.

Pakistan's High Commission issued a strong protest.

"The government of Pakistan has lodged a strong protest with the Indian Government over the illegal detention and manhandling of Mohammad Farooq, a driver of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, by the Indian security personnel," it said in a statement. "The harassment of the Pakistani official is a violation of international conventions as well as the diplomatic norms."

An army spokesman confirmed the arrest of Anil Kumar but could not provide further details.

PTI reported that the army man had been arrested under the National Security Act.

In August, Pakistan ordered the expulsion of an Indian diplomat for suspected involvement in spying. India responded shortly after by throwing out a Pakistani diplomat in a tit-for-tat move.

The expulsions were seen as a sign of deepening mistrust in the aftermath of the Mumbai blasts, which killed more than 180 people.

But the two sides have agreed to resume foreign secretary talks in mid-November.
