CHENNAI: With India registering the second highest number of natural disasters in the world, according to a report released by the UN this year, the best way to deal with the growing number of casualties is to spread awareness, said Dr YEA Raj, Deputy Director General of Meteorology.In his valedictory address at a national seminar on ‘Disaster Management and Law - Issues and Challenges’ organised by Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University on the eve of International Day of Natural Disaster Reduction. The theme for this year is Disaster Risk Reduction. Raj said, although it is not possible to have a completely risk-free strategy under these conditions, awareness is the key in reducing casualties during disasters and added that warnings are given an hour before tsunamis are expected.“INSAT, RADAR and satellite imaging have been around for many years. Some of the warning systems have been around since 1877. We cannot prevent these things from happening.” Organised by the PG Department of Environmental Law and Legal Order, the two-day seminar covered disasters and early warning systems, environmental impact of disasters, national and international legal responses for disaster management, nuclear disasters, terrorism, principles of liability, human rights for those affected and post disaster developments.Bhola Nath, IPS, DGP and Director, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, and Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, Prof Dr V Vijayakumar, attended the seminar.
