SAMBALPUR: Shakti worship has a special significance in the rural hinterland of the region. Boial Yatra is a seven-day journey that the rural folks undertake on Aswina Suklapakhya Nabami for their well-being and a good harvest. The festival that began on October 2 saw the priest, swaying to the beats of traditional musical instruments, being taken around the village. It is believed that the Goddess merges with the priests otherwise known as ‘Barua’. The other rituals include animal sacrifice. Similarly, Sonepur celebrates 16-day Bali Yatra beginning from Mahalaya. A similar scene of ‘Barua’ dancing to traditional instruments greets the devotees here. Though the Yatra is celebrated at different places across Sonepur, Sureswari, Samaleswari, Khambeswari and Budharaja pithas attract huge crowd.
