CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday presented various awards instituted by the State Government to their recipients, after hoisting the National Flag on the ramparts of Fort St George. The CM presented this year’s Kalpana Chawla award for courage and daring enterprise to Dr S Sangeetha, Revenue Divisional Officer, who made headlines during the Assembly polls in April for undertaking a midnight raid which led to the seizure of about `5.1 crore found atop a private bus parked at Pon Nagar, Tiruchy.The CM handed over the award, carrying a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, to Sangeetha. Sangeetha was the returning officer of the Tiruchy West Assembly constituency.The CM also presented awards for exemplary service for the welfare of differently-abled to R Duraisamy of Avadi, Chennai (best doctor); Priya Theodore, Rehabilitation Centre for Blind Women, Mannarpuram, Tiruchi (best social worker); Bishop Sargent Special School for Mentally Retarded, Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli (best institution); P Ponnadurai of Tiruchy (best employer); M Jayaseeli, District Differently Abled Welfare Officer, Theni; (best district differently-abled persons welfare officer) and District Central Cooperative Bank, Vellore (best cooperative bank). P K Manian, president of the Organisation for Rural Development, Vellore; was awarded received the award for his organisation, for service to women. A Paripoorna Lilly, Project Director, RECO, Pudukottai, was adudjed the ‘best social worker.’Earlier, the CM accepted the Guard of Honour. Later, she exchanged I-Day greetings with invitees and public. Assembly Speaker D Jayakumar, State ministers, High Court Judges, Officers of the Armed Forces as well as the police and political leaders attended. Leader of Opposition Vijayakanth celebrated I-Day at his party office.
