KOCHI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will launch an ambitious scheme to increase its customer base for Internet services. The public sector telecom service provider has announced a number of data plans and offers to woo the customers of all segments. “Our target for the current fiscal is 50,000 broadband connections and 4 lakh mobile connections. Speed of most popularly preferred unlimited plans like 499, 625, 750, 850 and 950 has been doubled,” said principal general manager P T Mathew. To make broadband popular, installation charges have been waived for the existing landline customers. For a new connection with landline and broadband, both the installation charges are waived. “We have made WiMax service available at 59 locations in Kochi city and 20 locations outside Kochi. There is an unlimited home plan for Rs 750 per month and Limited business plan for Rs 850 per month with free usage of 9 GB. Like broadband, serving and retired employees of government and Public Sector Undertakings are eligible for 20 per cent discount on plan charge,” he said. Eyeing the tablet market, BSNL has launched a scheme under which a 32k micro SIM and free data usage of 2 GB for one month’s validity are packed with a starter pack of Rs 100. Postpaid plan of Rs 1000 also exists.On the mobile phone service side, Mithram is the most accepted and popular plan. About the Mobile number portability (MNP), Mathew said that 7500 customers of other service providers migrated to BSNL in Ernakulam SSA alone. Initiatives for studentsThe company has launched ‘Topper Learning- Online Learning Programme’ for students in class IX-XII. The project was launched in conjuction with Greycells 18 Media Limited. “It is a unique initiative for students of classes IX-X11, covering syllabus of various boards like CBSE, ICSE and other major state boards. Topper learning provides the most comprehensive library of video lessons covering the entire curriculum. BSNL Topper subscription is available for any Broadband customer of BSNL at a nominal charge of `150 per month,” said Mathew. BSNL is the agency implementing the National Mission on Eduction through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT), a project initiated by the Union Ministry of Human Resources to facilitate researchers and research students. Under this project, a high speed broadband network is commissioned connecting 400 universities, affiliated colleges and polytechnics. The central IT department is also a part of this project. “130 colleges in Ernakulam and Idukki are connected to this project”, Mathew added.
