Bhopal: Policemen in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam district donned pink turbans during the marriage procession of a Dalit groom to help him follow the tradition of riding on a horseback and thwart any attack by members allegedly of an upper caste community.

The incident took place in Negroon village which comers under the constituency of Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot's son Jitendra Gehlot.

After 60 years of Independence, caste oppression still exists in Negroon where Dalits are not allowed to ride on a horseback as the upper caste community members take it as an offence.

Groom Prabhulal's father Puralal Malaviya sought police protection as another Dalit groom from the same village had to wear helmet to brave stones pelted by upper caste villagers in 2015.

Pavan Pavan Malviya was unaware of the impending danger when his marriage procession reached Negroon village and he was attacked for violating the ‘social codes’ set by the upper caste villagers, reports said. .

According to reports, no Dalit has ever dared to take out such a procession in the village in the past. The upper caste members feel this was a privilege only they enjoyed, and no Dalit should ride a horse to his wedding.
