A 120-year-old tree a huge banyan tree in Chowdalli village of Mundagod taluk of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka. It has branches scattered in an area of two acres of land. This 120-year-old tree was planted by a monk named Thippannajja Konnakeri. It provides shade to the travellers and the villagers. This tree is located in front of the Mylaralingam Temple. This tree-shaped temple of Chowdalli is known as Mini Mailara.
The tree is located on the two acres of land which belong to a family of Konnakeri. It is a true eco-loving family who sacrificed their land for trees amidst people who encroach on farmland and cut down trees. People have also associated divine feelings with the tree and believe that gods reside in this century-old banyan tree. Due to its large size, the tree attracts spectators from different villages and cities. The largest Banyan tree is located in the Botanical Garden at Shibpur of Howrah city in Kolkata. It is 255 years old and is spread over 5 acres of land.
India has abundant Banyan Trees. Some are located in the villages while others are in the botanical gardens. A 100-year-old Banyan Tree is located in the village named Thirumala village of Indalwai mandal, Nizamabad district. It can be spotted in front of Ellamma Temple. Every year a special function is held in the temple and this tree serves as a shade to all the visitors who visit the temple for the function.
Former MPTC Chiluka Kishan mentioned that the roods from this tree have spread out to grow another large tree beside it. The villagers reportedly take care of the tree to preserve it for the coming years. The festivals are held around this tree on Tuesdays and Sundays of each week. The visitors sit under the tree for shelter during this festival.
