Two cellphones and SIM cards were seized from David and Aiyappan, main accused in the rowdy Jegan murder case, lodged in the Kalapet Central jail here on Sunday.
Police sources said a cellphone was seized from Aiyappan while a cellphone and SIM cards were seized from David in the raids by the jail authorities .
The police later said that a complaint was registered with the Kalapet police station. However, a case in the matter could be registered only after getting the court’s permission. The court is closed due to Ramzan holiday.
Main accused Aiyappan and his gang members were involved in the country-made bomb attack on a police van that killed the notorious rowdy Jegan, while in transit to Karaikal jail after being produced in the Puducherry court.
There have been several allegations against a few of the jail authorities of conspiring with the inmates in the past. The authorities have put up jammers in the jail to disrupt any cellular contacts, but the inmates were still found to be using cellphones with higher frequencies, according to sources. The sources added that the relatives could also have smuggled the cellphones to the jail, when they visit the inmates.
Deputy Inspector General of police, I D Shukla, said that the police have taken the seizure very seriously and investigations are on. He said that he had requested the UT government for installing more sophisticated jammers in the 35-acre central jail complex at Kalapet.
Shukla said that 13 cases have been registered in connection with cellphone seizures in the last one year at the jail. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (North), S Ramaraj, said that the police conducted searches in houses at Vanarapet and other areas. He added the searches would continue in the coming days without any let up.
