New Delhi: Controversial Bangaladeshi writer could be spending her last few days in India.
Over a month after contoversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen was forced to leave Kolkata, the Central Government has told her that she either continues to stay in Delhi under strict protection or leave the country. The 45-year-old writer is currently living in an undisclosed location near the capital.
Reacting to the government decision, Taslima said she might consider leaving India. "Given a choice, I will prefer to leave India," the Bangladeshi author told CNN-IBN.
Top government sources revealed that the decision was taken after a meeting between Intelligence Bureau Director PC Haldar and Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta earlier on Thursday.
Returning to West Bengal is not an option for the author as the State Government has made it clear to the author that she can't return to Kolkata.
Taslima has been on the run since November following an agitation by some Islamic groups demanding her ouster from India. A month back, the West Bengal Government threw Taslima out of Kolkata branding her as a security threat.
She was subsequently shifted to Jaipur where the Rajasthan Government hosted her as a state guest for a night before shifting her to Delhi sensing a threat to her life. Taslima has been virtually under house arrest ever since.
The Centre's decision was taken almost a month after the Bangladeshi writer had been forced to leave Kolkata following violent protests by hardline Islamist groups.
Taslima was even forced to retract the controversial statements of her book Dwikhandito following the protests.
Reacting to Centre's decision, the Secretary of All India Minority Forum, Kolkata, Idris Ali said Taslima has no right to stay in India. "She should leave India as soon as possible," he said.
