KOCHI: With commercial animated films like  the recently released Kung Fu Panda 2 making a great hit among the masses, the future of animation and related fields seem too bright. Hence, the demand for animation professionals and free-lancers is bound to increase, making it an avenue with excellent prospects. Graphics and animation have now become indispensable in films, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, television, educational DVDs and corporate presentations. Since India has a huge number of skilled professionals and low-cost studios, the country has also become a major animation outsourcing destination in the world.  “Animation is a course highly on demand. We have introduced a full-fledged three-year BSc degree course in Multimedia and Animation. Even within that degree course, there are specialisations, as it is a fast-growing sector” Ravishankar, business development manager, Arena Multimedia, Thiruvanathapuram, said. There are both long and short-term courses and the curriculum generally covers a number of related areas. The only qualification required for most of the courses is Plus-Two with preference to students holding degree or diploma in Fine Arts. Many institutes offer courses in animation and multimedia.The Thiruvananthapuram campus of Keltron Animation offers diploma courses in animation and visual effects, game development and certificate course in advanced 3D animation. The Kozhikode campus offers professional diploma course in animation, VFX and multimedia. The course module includes art and fundamentals, drawing for animation, graphic design, 2D animation, 3D modelling and animation, editing and visual effects. The duration is 14 months. Toonz Animation Academy provides training facilities for 3D and 2D animation.Amrita School of Arts and Science, Kochi,  conducts a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) course in visual media with specialisation in film and television; graphic arts and animation; communicative journalism. Graduates in any subject with 50 percent marks are eligible for admission.  DC Media School, Kinfra Film and Video Park, Thiruvananthapuram, conducts a PG diploma course in graphics and animation design covering character drawing, cell animation, basic film techniques, modelling, claymation, 2D and 3D animation, non-linear editing, sound and music scoring, etc. Graduates in any discipline are eligible for admission. The National Institute of Design (NID), Pandi, Ahmedabad, under the Government of India, offers courses in graphic design, animation film design, film and video communication. Plus-Two holders can join the four-year graduate diploma programme in designing and opt for specialisation. The Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, conducts a one-and-half-year certificate course in animation and computer graphics for Plus-Two students, Fine Arts diploma holders will be given preference. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Mumbai and Guwahati offer Master of Design programmes for BTech holders. Qualified animators find good positions in media-related fields, from movies to gaming companies. “The pay is good and there are plenty of opportunities outside India too. Placement is guaranteed for the courses and skilled animators get Rs 20,000 and above at entry level,” Ravishankar said.
