CHENNAI: Architect–programmer-cybernetician-artist and academician, Balaji Rajasekaran is only 23, but his entry into the Limca Book of Records comes as no surprise. A faculty member and alumnus of the Hindustan University, the youngster has made it to the record book for having the maximum number of accomplishments at such a young age. This is apart from the several international and national awards that he has won for his innovations in the field of architecture. Balaji says he aspires to influence the design culture in India, both in theory and practice by promoting collaborative and interdisciplinary grounds for design research. He elaborates, “I have recently founded an experimental design group ‘dMac’ in my University. This group seeks to drive a progressive design culture by providing thought, leadership opportunities, creating collaborative design platforms and enabling non-standard artifacts in the domains of architecture, as well as urban design.”Among his accomplishments are his thesis titled ‘Contextual programming and Design of a Vibrant Transit Hub @ Chennai Central’. The thesis has been shortlisted as one of the top 20 in the world and has won an international level Best Thesis Award from Archiprix; a prestigious claim for any architecture student. He also won the Best Student Award (International Level) from US Green Building Council in 2008. Balaji has also bagged the ‘Young CAADRIA (Computer Aided Architectural Design & Research in Asia) Award’ at the International Conference, held at Hong Kong last year. In appreciation of Hindustan University and Balaji’s talents, CAADRIA has decided to bring the Conference to Hindustan University, where Balaji is the Executive Coordinator and host in 2012.
