Beijing: China's first helicopter to fight fire will be deployed by the middle of next year at its biggest city, Shanghai.
The Russian-made Ka-32 helicopter, currently undergoing final stages of assembly, will be delivered to the metropolis by January next year, said Shanghai fire department chief Zhao Zixin.
Shanghai will set up an air fire-crew to conduct emergency rescue and fire fighting missions involving skyscrapers, high-speed railways and viaducts.
Seven pilots and three mechanics are receiving training in Russia for this purpose, Zhao said.
Another 20 air-crew are currently going through simulator training and study in Shanghai, state-run news agency reported.
Shanghai has over 14,000 high-rise buildings, including 400 building over 100 meters.
A fatal blaze in November, 2010 gutted a 28-story apartment building in Shanghai's Jing'an District killing 58 people.
