A dual world champion on the apparatus on 2006 and 2007, Chen extended his dominance into the Olympic arena on his Games debut in his specialist apparatus.
He gave China its sixth gymnastics gold medal of the Beijing Games, to the delight of the 18,000 crowd at the National Indoor Stadium, maintaining the most dominant performance in the sport at Olympic level since the Soviet Union era.
Chen clinched gold with 16.6, 0.175 ahead of Yang on 16.425, with Ukrainian Oleksandr Vorobiov taking the bronze medal on 16.325.
Athens silver medallist Iordan Iovtchev of Bulgaria, at 35 the oldest gymnast at the Beijing Games, finished last in the field of eight after making a slight jump on landing.
