The largest ever translation of Chinese revolutionary leader Mao’s works in Tamil, was released in the city on Tuesday.
According to Sivam, publisher of Alaigal Veliyeetagam, the compilation comprises nine volumes, totalling 5,340 pages. “The voluminous edition gives readers an insight into the renowned Chinese leader’s philosophies, politics and thoughts. If someone wants to understand Mao in depth, these are the right books in Tamil” he said.
Asked about the necessity for translating the works of Mao, he said, a few writings, speeches and biography of the great leader have already been translated in Tamil, but in a small way. “However, the uniqueness of the just- released books, throws light on the circumstances that led to the revolution in China,” he added.
Pointing out that India has more cultural similarities with the neighbouring China, he said, “Most of the books on left ideologies and thoughts that are presently available in the country are from Russia. Apparently, it is also important to know about other Left movements that emerged in China.”
Sivam also stated that the Mao works were translated from English by eight translators. “Our initiatives to translate Mao’s works date back over seven years, involving the combined efforts of two publishing houses situated in two different cities of Tamil Nadu,” he said. While the first four volumes is the contribution of Vidiyal Pathipagam based in Coimbatore, the remaining is brought out by Alaigal Veliyeetagam.
