Most of the time, even when we think that we are using our free will and making a ‘choice’, we are only enacting our own karma without being aware of it.
As we experience this karmic cycle, we will generate fresh thoughts and feelings which will produce new karmic reactions that will again curtail our free will. If we want to change all this and enlarge the scope of our free will, we must transform our thinking patterns completely by disciplining the mind. To do this, we have to use our will power.
Our soul has many divine powers around it which are activated when we meditate. The most prominent amongst these are the power of will, the power of understanding or comprehension and the power of action. Our power of will gives us a goal and motivates and propels us to achieve it. Our power of comprehension helps us to gather information, process it and evolve a plan to attain this goal.
Our power of action helps us to enact and actualise this plan and achieve our goal. What is important for us to realise is, the stronger our willpower, the faster is our progress. As all of us have experienced, where there is a will there is a way. And where there is a divine will, then there is definitely going to be a divine way. This is the key to achieve and succeed in life as well as in meditation.
Today, we do not know how strong our will power is because it keeps fluctuating. On an average, it may be at 10 or 15 per cent in most of us or it may even be much lower or higher than this. How do we find out whether our willpower is strong or weak? There is a simple indicator for this. Our willpower is directly proportional to the extent of confidence in us at any point of time.
That means when our confidence is down, our will power is also low and when our confidence is high, our willpower is also high. We begin each day with the hope that it will bring us new energy, new feelings, new circumstances, new inspiration and new ideas. However, when things do not go as we plan, how do we take it? When we are confronted by obstacles and challenges, how do we respond? Do we remain confident and take it in our stride or do we get frustrated and disheartened? This reveals the level of our will power to us.
So, though the ability to will is always inside each one of us, it has to be activated and brought out fully if we want to drop undesirable traits and nurture good ones.
