Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday ordered the extension of the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) to all farmers who are members of the Farmers Security Scheme (FSS).
The initiative is expected to benefit around three crore farmers and their dependents who are registered under the FSS. A detailed Government Order is likely to be issued soon in this regard.
With an aim to achieve universal health care for the people of Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister inaugurated the CMCHIS on January 11, 2012. The scheme is meant to provide insurance coverage for life-threatening ailments to the economically weakers sections of the State. The scheme has enhanced the sum assured to Rs 1lakh per year and Rs 4 lakh for a period of four years. For certain specified ailments and procedures of critical nature, the overall limit is up from Rs 1lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh. The beneficiaries will be issued a new insurance card.
The Chief Minister also allocated Rs 2.61 crore to upgrade the Cobalt machines used for cancer treatment in government hospitals at Thanjavur, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. This measure would benefit cancer patients hailing from financially backward families.
The cancer treatment division at Royapettah GH was started in 1978 and this has been upgraded as a speciality centre at a cost of Rs 17 crore. Construction of the new building for this centre is in its final stages.
Now, the Chief Minister has allocated Rs 9.93 crore towards creating new medical and non-medical posts, purchasing medical equipment, furniture, computers and other materials required for the cancer speciality centre at Royapettah GH.
