MADURAI: Stage is now set for Union Minister M K Alagiri and his family to appear before the Madurai Collector for an inquiry regarding the violation in the construction of Dhaya College of Engineering and Technology in Sivarakottai near Tirumangalam, here on Thursday. The summon Roc.No.J3/405/2011, dated September 6, 2011, sent by Madurai Collector U Sagayam stated that Alagiri, his wife Kanthi Alagiri and son Durai Dayanidhi violated the norms in the construction of the buildings of the college owned by ‘MK Alagiri Educational Trust’ by causing damage to two of the five irrigation sluices originating from Karisalkulam tank which was being used to irrigate 331.83 acres.The summon has been sent in the wake of a petition dated July 18, 2011, filed by M Ramalingam, of Sivarakottai, regarding encroachment and damage to sluices connecting the Kaunda river. According to the petition, an inspection conducted by the DRO, Madurai on August 19, revealed that the sluices were destructed due to the construction of the college and it affected the livelihood of farmers of the region.It was also mentioned in the summon that the PWD had spent `38.87 lakh under the IAMWARM project for renovation of the tank and the Centre had spent Rs 50,74,847 under the MGNRES for desilting and deepening the tank. So, the efforts made by both governments turned out to be a futile exercise due to the destruction of channels.Further, the summon stated, “From the aforesaid facts it is clear that the trust has committed offences under the Tamil Nadu Irrigation Works (Construction of Field Bothies) Act 1959, and the Tamil Nadu Farmers Management of Irrigation System Act 2000, and the Tamil Nadu Protection of Tanks and Eviction of Encroachment Act 2007.” Taking these issues into consideration, the Collector sent the summon to their Madurai address and advised them to be present before him on September 16.
