SAMBALPUR: Justice continues to elude the 12 Dalit and tribal families on dharna for the last 27 days at proposed plant of Visaka Industries Limited in Titkel village under Rengali block of the district.
The families are demanding demarcation of land by the district administration following land grabbing allegations against Visaka Industries Limited. The company is into manufacturing of asbestos cement roofing sheets and building boards.With the demarcation of land being postponed thrice, the villagers apprehend that the worst fear of losing their land may come true.
About 130 acres purchased by the company is mired in controversy with most of the land acquired being ceiling surplus and recorded in the name of the landless. Maintaining that they were handed over the ceiling surplus in 1983 by Rengali Tehsildar, Lundru Oram, Suru Oram, Jagdish Barik and Dukhu Mirdha said they were shocked to hear that their land records were forged. We have been cultivating the land and also paying land and revenue taxes, they added. Visaka has forcibly occupied our land and has built a boundary wall around it, they allegedVisaka has been accused of grabbing 130 acres of land including 57 acres of forest and rayati land besides ceiling surplus and those recorded in the name of the landless. The villagers are demanding that the 57 acres be demarcated and handed over to their rightful owners.
