New Delhi: Senior Congress party leader, K Keshav Rao's son's case has been handed over to the CID by the Andhra Pradesh government.
Venkat Rao, a real estate businessman, has been accused of shooting his business partner Prashant Reddy. Reddy had died under suspicious circumstances after receiving a bullet injury at Venkat's residence in Prasashan Nagar.
Venkat had called Reddy to his flat in Prashasan Nagar, Jubliee Hills, to discuss a land deal. While Venkat's family says Reddy took Venkat's revolver and committed suicide, Reddy's family are crying murder, saying that he had no reason to kill himself.
Reddy's family has also claimed that the ruling party has been trying to hush-up the case. In response, Keshav Rao has resigned as the party's state unit president, to ensure a "free, fair and impartial" probe.
Keshav Rao, who hails from Telangana region, was appointed party president in 2004 after the Congress came to power in the state. His three-year term was to end next month.
Venkat was arrested by the police on Monday night at the Apollo hospital, where he had admitted himself after the incident, claiming to be "depressed" and in "shock".
The police on Monday, filed a case under IPC Section 302 (murder) and booked Venkat.
"As there are no eyewitnesses to the incident, we are grilling Venkat to find out the truth. There are various versions of the incident and the matter is being investigated. Questioning him is necessary to find out the truth," ACP (Banjara Hills) Ramakrishnaiah was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
Meanwhile, Reddy's wife Vilasini alleged her husband was shot dead by Venkat and demanded a CBI probe.
This is the second shooting incident in the affluent Jubilee Hills neighbourhood in three years. Popular Telugu film actor Balakrishna had shot and injured two film producers at his residence in the same area. The actor had later got himself admitted to hospital.
