Contract workers' strike illegal: Honda
Honda says the strike by contractual workers at the company's Manesar plant is "illegal".

New Delhi: Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) on Wednesday described the strike by contractual workers at the company's Manesar plant as "illegal".

Despite efforts to end the deadlock, the strike entered the second day on Wednesday. Around 200 contractual workers are demanding that they be absorbed as regular workers of the company, while the HMSI management said it was not possible.

"Under labour laws, a worker is entitled for regularisation only after 240 days of service. Here the strikers are those who have not even spent 100 days. How can we take them on the company's rolls," a company official told PTI.

He said the management "has nothing to do" with the reconciliation talks. "It is between the contractors, their workers and the state labour department," he said.

Asked whether production in the factory was hit due to the strike, he claimed the output was normal. "The production is as per market plan and there is no effect due to the strike," he said. The plant is estimated to have a daily output of around 1,400 scooters and 400 bikes.

According to sources, officials from the state labour department met the contractors and the striking workers in order to broker peace. However, the talks have been inconclusive, they said.

On Wednesday, the police was deployed at the plant, a move termed as a precautionary measure by the management.

A fully-owned subsidiary of Japan's Honda Motor Co, HMSI had last year witnessed one of the worst labour unrests when some of its striking workers, mostly regulars, were brutally beaten up by Haryana police personnel while they were protesting against the dismissal of fellow workers.
